
Adam Bessie is community college English professor in the San Francisco Bay Area and writes comics which have been published in many national outlets, including The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Boston Globe, and Truthout. Adam won The New York Association of Black Journalists 2018 Award for his graphic essay “Betsy Devos’ ‘School Choice’ Movement Isn’t Social Justice. It’s a Return to Segregation” (with Erik Thurman).
Adam also appears in the BBC Scotland documentary Long Live My Happy Head, which is featured at the 2022 Frameline Film Festival in San Francisco.
Most recently, Adam is the author of the graphic memoir Going Remote: A Teacher’s Journey (illustrated by Peter Glanting, published by Censored Press/Seven Stories Press). Publisher’s Weekly awarded it one of the Top Ten Adult Graphic Novels to look out for in 2023.
